Writing Songs in Cubase So It Doesn't Sound Robotic!
Everybody's into the computer songwriting craze. And some is doing quite well with it than others. Then there are those who do learn gradually and eventually step into the winner's circle along with the rest. But the one question as a songwriter that I always seem to get goes like this..... How do you get your Cubase Workstation Songs to sound so real that it sounds like real musicians playing? Well one thing that helps is that you would have to be an actual musician that knows the instruments well, but even if you don't know all the instruments fluently, you can always take a good listen to music that's already out there, and pay close attention to each instrument played.
For example, if the song you're listening to is very funky, chances are you're going to hear a slap bass guitar with a flanger that's in sync with the song tempo. It also helps to watch for dynamics in the song. Velocity is key here. If you're writing a song for a rap artist, and you're going through different rap beats, and rap loops, make sure that you're getting the rest of the mix as close to the rap beat as possible. Just like a group of singers has to sound like one voice even in harmony, your instrumental should sound the same way. And if you're working Cubase, get plugins that are as close to the real sound as possible. You can find a lot of vintage as well as free vst plugins on google. Acid Loops is absolutely wonderful to work with. But browse around, I'm sure that you'll find a lot of good ones, and you'll never be bored finding them.
