Beat Makers - What You Need To Know
When you are just starting out making your own music (especially dance and rap), it is a bit daunting as there are loads of programs that claim to be the best. Finding a program that allows the novice to start as soon as possible without having to understand all the technical stuff is really hard. On top of this is the fact that most software programs are targeted at a high level with a steep learning curve and the ones that do cater for the beginner are a little light on features.
What follows is advice on what the beginner should look for as minimum features for a beat maker. This is if you want to get proper sound quality or if you want to progress and sell your music.
First of all, you need a beat maker that uses WAV files as these retain studio sound quality. Make sure that the beat maker you choose uses industry standard 44.1kHz, 16 bit stereo masters which are the standards for CD (meaning no loss in audio quality.) This means that you can also make MP3 files from these masters. If you try doing it the other way around, you lose audio quality in the low and high frequencies, meaning your music will sound thin which is not what you want from rap or dance music!
Then make sure that the beat maker can do more than ONE bar. If you want to make a 3 minute dance track, it will not be very interesting just repeating the same bar over and over again! Make sure that you can have a MINIMUM of 32 bars, that way you can make proper tunes.
One last thing to think about is that the beat maker allows you to add your own sounds. With this feature, you can get away from using just the sound library the software gives you and start to really push the creative boat out. If you think that hundreds of people own the same piece of software, the tunes produced will sound quite similar (when you come to sell your beats) as some people will choose the same drum kits or whatever. Adding your own sounds allows you to be individual and keeps you from getting bored with your music making. So, there you have it, the three most important aspects, in my opinion, to making sure you choose a good beat maker.
