Tips for Your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)
Now that you got your DAW and your excited on getting started here are a few good tips on maximize your efficiency...
1. Know your keyboard shortcuts. This will cut time especially if you have to make your mouse travel from one side of the screen to the other. It's annoying to when you only use a tracking pad.
2. Maximize you computers' resources. Don't work on your DAW while in Facebook or with another program open. Your system will be prone to crashing and it sucks when you lost hours of work. Believe me it's happened to me. You should concentrate on you project anyways.
3. Even though DAWs have a common view like linear editing you should get to know the other views and what they are for. Each DAW has a special feature get to know it and specialize in it so you can sound different and unique.
4. Get to know the instruments you got. What are their features? Why would you choose one over the other.
5. Be organized and label your tracks. If you don't label the track you may get confused, hesitant, and close work on your music. You are here to follow through with a song you want to make and it takes hours making. You don't want to stop due to disorganization. It's to easy to stop like this.
6. Be patient because hours and hours will be spent. So take breaks frequently and don't burn out. Let your ears get some rest. Stay inspired. If you got it then fine if you don't then don't push it. Listen to the music you love and whatever else that makes you feel inspired. It's important.
7. Save save and save. It sucks to be working for hours and your computer crashes on you losing the breakthrough you expressed.
8. Find out what kind of VST's are out there for your DAW a great source for them is http://www.dontcrack.com. Using a different synth for every song is a wise thing to do so your audience doesn't get bored. They may not notice but they sure as hell are not bored when you see them bobbing their heads to the beat.
9. Keep up to date on forums that have to do with your DAW. This way you can learn and share your beats. Who knows you night get discovered.
10. Save different versions of your song. This is helpful when the undo command doesn't work
